This is a memorial design of sorts I developed for a competition to propose a public space of the future. This intervention is a plaza that has a meadow of tall grass planted in grass pave, with paths split into parallel multiples according to CDC social distancing guidelines. The degree to which the grass (all cut once a year) is worn will record how faithfully the paths have been adhered to, in an effort to reflect the effects of CDC guidelines on public space and human spatial behavior. The meadow will record gathering patterns, protests, celebrations as well as everyday use. This surface is wearing, tearing, even burning with repeated use. It transcribes human behavior in times of disease and subsequent precaution as well as social unrest. How has a virtual world changed how we value and use public space? Space for gathering, space for play, space for dissent?
